IB Music Grade 6 Course

Introduction: The arts are a universal form of human expression and a unique way of knowing that engage us in affective, imaginative and productive activity. Learning through the arts helps us to explore, shape and communicate our sense of identity and understanding of the world, while providing opportunities to develop self-confidence, resilience and adaptability. The IB MYP arts value the process of creating artwork as much as the finished product. The Music curriculum in Grade 6 seeks to be challenging and to encourage students to engage in theoretical, music-making and curatorial practice by giving them the opportunity to build knowledge and understanding, develop skills, think creatively, and respond to music.

Description: Students will begin the course by exploring music and its correlation with psychology. This is done through investigations and explorations of the elements of music and the way that different cultures utilizes it. Through this exploration students will be investigating the elements of music to determine how the social change within them pertains to their specific music taste. This will enable students to form their own perspective about music in a subject specific way which cultivates their active listening and lifelong musicianship. During the second unit students will utilize their knowledge gained from the previous two units to focus on the process of creating by imitating the work of others. Students will identify the features of a genre used by a musician and use these features to create a remix in the genre's style. Students will demonstrate the development of their skills through the completion of a process journal detailing their creative process and schedule as well as a product as a formative, and later as a summative. The third unit is a continuous assessment unit spanning the entire semester. In the third unit, students will investigating and exploring the musical language which artistic citizens utilize to communicate with one another. The concepts and rules that make up music theory are very much like the grammatical rules that govern written language. Music theory also enables students to understand the structure and meaning behind a musical composition. It is therefore a fundamental part of the foundation for any musician. 

Assessment: All Music work is assessed against the MYP assessment criteria, using the 1-8 scale. Each assessment piece is accompanied by a rubric or other assessment tool. Assessment takes place in the form of regular formative and a summative task per unit.

The Music curriculum in Grade 7 seeks to be challenging and to encourage students to engage in theoretical, music-making and curatorial practice by giving them the opportunity to build knowledge and understanding, develop skills, think creatively, and respond to music.

It will help students to build their thinking skills - in particular, they will be exploring the definition of music, Students will explore ways to accurately describe sound, investigate how different people and cultures use music, and determine how music can be visually represented. All of these are opportunities to challenge students' current thinking, forcing them to consider new perspectives and justify their thoughts. During the second unit students will be enabled express their ideas with emotion through creating authentic music compositions. They will explore non-traditional music notation for broadening their horizon to be encouraged to design and create their own unique musical compositions. This unit will enable students to utilize music sequencing software to identify different sources for sounds in a composition as well as to sample and create their own pop remix. This unit will flow into the brief history of human beat-boxing where students will be introduced to concepts through various modalities. It will create an opportunity for students to perform in front of their peers. The third unit is a continuous assessment unit spanning the entire semester. In the third unit, students will investigating and exploring the musical language which artistic citizens utilize to communicate with one another. Introduction: The Music curriculum in Grade 8 seeks to be challenging and to encourage students to engage in theoretical, music-making and practical skills by giving them the opportunity to build knowledge and understanding, develop skills, think creatively, and respond to music.

It will help students to build their thinking skills - in particular, they will be exploring the definition of music, Students will explore ways to accurately describe sound, investigate how different people and cultures use music, and determine how music can be visually represented. All of these are opportunities to challenge students' current thinking, forcing them to consider new perspectives and justify their thoughts. In the second unit students will study the art of being a conductor. They will also create their own compositions. The third unit is a continuous assessment unit spanning the entire semester. In the third unit, students will investigate and explore the musical language which artistic citizens utilize to communicate with one another. The concepts and rules that make up music theory are very much like the grammatical rules that govern written language.

Introduction: The Music curriculum in Grade 9 seeks to be challenging and to encourage students to engage in theoretical, music-making and curatorial practice by giving them the opportunity to build knowledge and understanding, develop skills, think creatively, and respond to music.

IB Music Grade 10 Course


Introduction: The Music curriculum in Grade 10 seeks to challenge and encourage students by engaging them in theory and analysis, composition, performance, and a variety of musical cultures. giving them the opportunity to build knowledge and understanding, develop skills, think creatively, and respond to music. The Music year 5 curriculum aims to give students a foundation of knowledge and skills needed for the Diploma Programme Music course. 

Description: Students will begin the course by exploring music theory, using the knowledge gained to both analyze existing music and create music. The knowledge and concepts we explore are fundamental to success in the DP Music course. The second unit will put students into the role of conceptual artist, where we explore abstract musical works and use technology to create our own abstract sound piece.
